When it comes down to it, the only thing we bring to the table that almost no other Maine logging company does is that we’re adamantly future-facing.  We’re planning and acting on the changes in our culture, technology, and environmental needs in a way few other Maine loggers are by pursuing truly sustainable logging.

The natural questions from here are, what does “sustainable logging” actually mean? Why does sustainable logging matter? The Timber Supply Chain

These are the various processes and steps involved in the timber supply chain that all need to be involved in the sustainable logging certification process for valid certification.  For the purposes of a simple overview of the timber supply chain, there are four general categories to consider as a part of the process.  Notably, advancements in tracking infrastructure and wider adoption of these standards are making these standards accessible even to lots as small as 10 acres.

New and Upcoming Wood Product Technologies

In recent years, researchers have been exploring the potential of wood as a next-generation structural and functional material. The study “Transforming wood as next-generation structural and functional materials for a sustainable future” by Tanveer Farid et al. reviews state-of-the-art physicochemical modifications and strategies to create versatile wood hydrogels, aerogels, membranes, and fibers with different physicochemical features.

The researchers focus on the hierarchical structure and biocompatibility of wood, combined with cutting-edge processing methods, to overcome its natural limitations for various applications. These modifications have led to the development of advanced sustainable wood products such as transparent wood and plastic-replacing wood products.

Transparent Wood

Transparent wood, a groundbreaking material with the potential to revolutionize the construction and other industries, is created by altering the structure of regular wood sheets. Researchers at the University of Maryland have developed a process that makes ordinary wood nearly as transparent as glass. The resulting material is stronger, lighter, and better insulated than glass, making it an energy-efficient alternative for construction purposes.

The process involves treating wood with hydrogen peroxide to remove its brown color, then infusing it with a tough, transparent epoxy. The final product allows more than 90% of light to pass through it and is more than 50 times stronger than transparent wood created using previous methods. This innovative material could be used in load-bearing windows, roofs, and even see-through houses.

Transparent wood also has potential applications in solar energy, as its “high optical haze” could increase the efficiency of solar cells by up to 30%. This makes it an attractive option for architects and engineers seeking greener building materials.

Plastic-Replacing Wood Products

To combat pollution and support a more sustainable economy, researchers are developing bio-based, green alternatives to fossil raw materials. One such approach involves creating biodegradable materials from wood components, such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.

Researchers at the Institute of Biobased Products and Paper Technology at Graz University of Technology, Austria, are working on novel packaging materials that exhibit barrier properties comparable to synthetic plastics. These bio-based materials aim to protect packaged contents (e.g., food, cosmetics, and medicines) from external factors such as oxygen and humidity while remaining biodegradable and environmentally friendly.

Another project, called “BreadCell,” focuses on developing polymer foams made of cellulose without plastic, creating environmentally friendly lightweight materials based on wood or cellulose. These sustainable cellulose foams could replace existing composites made of synthetic polymers, which are commonly used in safety components in cars or lightweight, robust sports equipment.

These advanced sustainable wood products, such as transparent wood and plastic-replacing materials, demonstrate the potential of wood as a versatile, renewable resource in the fight against climate change and pollution.
